When I got to Munich, I went to the Hofbräuhaus, the largest beer hall in Germany. I ordered some enchiladas and Coors Lite, to be served in a 6 oz. glass, like I Get back in Texas. Instead, they brought me a dark beer in a liter mug and some sausage and sauerkraut.

This beloved beer hall has existed since 1644 and lives up to its reputation: beer, food, tourists, oom-pah music, drunken revelry and Lederhosen.

Since the Hofbräuhaus didn’t have what I was looking for, I went to the Augustiner Bierhalle, the second largest beer hall in Germany. Again I ordered Coors Lite, to be served in a 6 oz. glass, and some enchiladas. Instead, they brought me a dark beer in a liter mug and suckling pig roasted in dark beer.

This is the famous Glockenspiel on Marienplatz in Munich. Every hour the crowd below watches these figures come to life to mark the change of time. The Glockenspiel is on the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall). Built 1867 – 1909 in Flanders Gothic style; its facade, over 300 feet in length, features strikingly elaborate stone ornamentation. Its 260-foot tower with carillon is, with St. Peter’s Church and the twin towers of the Cathedral, one of the most distinctive features of the city’s skyline.
